Artist’s Almanac: Winter 2024-25

Winter always feels like the end of something,

even if it's both the end of a year and the start of a new one.

During the winter, I like to do the normal thing of reviewing the past and planning for the future. The thing I feel most frustrated about is that I have so many ideas for painting and drawings but those ideas mostly stay in my head… waiting. Yes my paintings take a lot of time to make, but also I am doing a lot of other things than just making art. So my focus for the new year is simple; Make More Art.

Each season this year I’m going to let you inside my studio and show you the art I’m making.

In My Sketchbook

Beginning In Spring

My next paintings is going to be pomegranate trees with some kind of wildlife around and in them.

It’s finally coming out of my sketchbook. I predict to be working on this one through the spring and summer.

Seasonal Inspiration

It snowed this winter in North Carolina.

We have been in North Carolina for about 6 months now and the locals said it had been about 10 years since it snowed like this. I have a forest behind my house and the snow made it magical. I feel like Narnia is in my backyard.

I went hiking in Red Rock Canyon.

I also had a short trip to Los Vegas and some friends took me out to Red Rock Canyon. Now thats a place that would be fun to paint plein air. I love hiking and being out in nature.

"Tree and Sky" a 8 x 10 horizontal oil painting by Jennifer Marie Keller
from $400.00

This painting started it all.

  • My new changing style of fluid impressionism mixed with academic naturalism.

  • A bold new colors

  • Leaning into spontaneous inspiration

  • Moving nature

Studio Musings

I feel like I am in a great flow in my studio lately.

In my studio I’m shifting between two things.

  1. Large Paintings

My paintings are what I do when I want to dive deep into a work. It’s fun but it also feels serious. Maybe because the canvas is huge and there are so many supplies to make a painting.

2. Small Pen Drawings

When I want to relax, I do my pen and ink drawings. I mostly do these while on my couch or curled up in a comfy chair. It’s doodling to work out ideas for future paintings or just fun drawings of family and friends.

Thanks for hanging out with me in my studio this winter.

I hope to see you soon in the Spring.

Your artist friend,
Jennifer Marie Keller
