Three Apples | The Alla Prima Project

I’m starting an alla prima project. I want to work on my direct painting technique so for a few months I’m going to be making a small painting a day.

This is my third one so far. I’ve been painting apples. My son just started kindergarten and he says kindergarteners eat apples so we’ve been having a surplus of apples in the house. And they are beautiful colorful things to paint.

I cut a small leafy branch out of my backyard and placed it behind the apples for an arching movement and another contrasting color. Though midway through the painting I took a break and when I came back the leafs had wilted down and completely changed the shape I had blocked in. So this is something to be mindful of next time.
