Caught Lightning In A Bottle
I’ve always found the phrase “lightning in a bottle” evocative. I know that phrase can mean different things, but I like thinking of it as doing the impossible.
Not long ago, I had a vivid fever dream.
I saw myself catching lightning in a bottle.
It was glowing, alive, and Otherworldly.
When I woke up, I knew I had to paint it.
I wanted the light to feel like it came from within,
as if the painting itself was the light source.
To me, this painting is about hope.
About the moment you realize that some part of you,
despite everything, still believes the impossible can happen.
The colors had to feel magical. Warm.
It had to feel atmospheric. Like that feeling in the air right when you know something extraordinary is happening. I kept the setting ambiguous.
This place could be a dream. A memory. A vision.
It’s part of my series, They Might Be Gods.
And maybe the figure holding the bottle is a god.
Or maybe they’re not.
Maybe we all are, or could be.
