I’m moving across the country.
While packing up my studio, I found my sketches and studies from my 19th century style art training.
Still Life Painting Sketches.
When making a painting I would first paint a small sketch to work out the composition and colors. These are done on scrapes of canvas. In this quick style can see my thought process for how I planned to make the finished painting.
Nude Studies
Every Tuesday evening at my atelier we would eat pizza and then draw or paint from the live model after our normal classes. The focus was on creating a beautiful light with atmospheric shadows. The mantra, ‘Light is Form and Shadow is Atmosphere’, was key here.
Master Copies.
Master copies were encouraged in my art training. Basically, a student copies an artwork from a master to understand the master’s style and problem solving. It is like getting a private art lesson from the Greats.
And More
From pen and ink to watercolor, I have many pieces I am making available until May 15th. Check them out before they go back in my studio boxes.
In my weekly newsletter I share my art and stories all about Beauty and Wonder
My art: windows into hidden places, worlds thick with an atmosphere that does well to keep secrets in shadows and truth in romanticized light.
My stories of being an artist. From painting nude models everyday for 5 years (do I have stories from this time), studying art history in enchanting Italy, to learning how to find inspiration in everyday life.
I hope this brings a bit of Beauty and Wonder to your inbox.
